THE COIN PICTURED IS THE ACTUAL COIN YOU ARE BIDDING ON AND WILL RECEIVE!1878-SBetween 1878 and 1882, the San Francisco mint produced a large quantity of boldly struck, highly lustrous, beautiful coins. The issue represented here was the first of that group. This entire issue was struck with the Type II reverse (concave breast). In the early years of San Francisco’s Morgan dollar production the strikes have such clarity that the individual breast feathers and the hair strands of Liberty seem to reach out to the viewer.This issue has highly reflective surfaces, which are evidence that this mint took great care with the coins it produced. Unfortunately, a number of cons are somewhat scarred and scuffed, visible in stark contrast to the blazing adjacent undamaged surface. Many pieces also exist with light or average abrasions, making gem MS-65+ coins available.Almost ten million pieces were produced. At least 15% of the coins seen today are in mint condition, and a large 50% of these qualify as MS-65 coins or better. Those coins, which are only MS-60s, usually are more heavily abraded and do not have strike or luster problems. LaVere Redfield had a number of 1878-S coins in his large collection.Semi-prooflike pieces exist in some quantity. These are almost always fully prooflike on one side and have regular mint luster on the other. Fully struck, fully prooflike coins (cameos) are in abundance. These are beautiful coins when minimally bagmarked, and qualify as MS-65+ gems. Expect to pay almost twice the MS-65 price.(Information above is from James B. Morgan, who had been a pupil of Wyon in the Royal Mint in London. His initial M is found at the base of the neck by the last lock of hair on the obverse, and on the reverse on the left most loop of the ribbon.
