The obverse design features an ever hopeful Lady Liberty striding confidently in full stride, enveloped in folds of the flag, with her right hand extended and branches or laurel and oak in her left. The reverse design, by United States Mint sculptor/engraver John Mercanti, features a striking heraldic eagle with shield, and olive branch in the right talon and arrows in the left.
