This massive territorial gold coin was struck from gold that was recovered from the sinking of the S.S. Central America on September 12, 1857. The California Historical Society provided the original dies that were copied by transfer process for production purposes and original California gold ingots were melted for this authorized restrike. A maximum of 5,000 restrikes were authorized and all were struck on September 3, 2001 in San Francisco using original minting equipment. The stamping date is shown on the reverse. This mirrored proof is housed in a plush velvet window box using a custom copper hammered metal frame that is fully displayable. The frame is then housed in a tan, custom-padded box with the California Historical Society plaque on top. Approximately a dozen original $50 pieces were struck for presentation purposes making them virtually unattainable. All paperwork and certificates are included. When originally sold in 2001, gold was approximately $275 an ounce and these have retailed for more than $5,000. Containing almost 2-1/2 ounces of gold and combined with the provenance, the history, and the special striking, these $50 restrikes will be treasured collectables for many generations. Strike #2475 |
