The Naugatuck Railroad Company was chartered in May 1845 and organized in February 1848. In May 1849, the first section was opened, from a junction with the New York and New Haven Railroad north to Seymour. Extensions soon opened to Waterbury and to Winstead, where the Central New England Railway later passed through. In November 1870, Naugatuck Railroad leased the Watertown and Waterville Railroad, giving it a branch to Waterville. The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad leased the Naugatuck on May 24, 1887, and merged with it on January 31, 1906.
The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation purchased some lines that were later leased to a new Naugatuck Railroad Company that began operations in 1996. Operated by the Railroad Museum of New England, the new Naugatuck Railroad Company is a heritage railway, primarily an excusion and historic passenger operation, with as-needed freight service. |
